Michael F. O'Brien

Michael F. O’Brien passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, in Vallejo, California, the city where he was born on December 28, 1946. Michael was a proud Vallejo native who dedicated his life to learning, service, and family. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History from Sonoma State University and later completed a master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Hayward. A lifelong member of St. Vincent’s Parish, Michael’s faith and commitment to community were central to his life. Michael worked for more than 30 years for the Veterans Administration as a Ratings Specialist, most of those years in either the San Francisco or Oakland office. Michael also served several years on the Grand Jury in Sacramento. He served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970. Following his service, Michael built a fulfilling life surrounded by family, books, and the outdoors. He loved reading—especially John Grisham novels and anything related to history—and was happiest tending his garden, traveling, camping, and taking trips to the Redwoods and Lake Tahoe. A passionate football fan and enthusiastic traveler, he explored much of the world, including Africa, Germany, the Czech Republic, and many other destinations. Michael will be lovingly remembered for his warmth, kindness, and deep devotion to his family. He was a faithful husband, a proud father and grandfather, and a friend to many. He is survived by his beloved wife of just under 50 years, Linda; his daughter Heather Judd and her husband John; his sons Timothy O’Brien and Thomas O’Brien, and Thomas’s wife, Mikayla. He is also survived by his brothers, John O’Brien and his wife Patti, and Bob O’Brien; his sister, Maureen Coffelt, and her husband Alton; as well as his cherished grandchildren, Zachariah, Ethan, Isabella, and Landon. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Saturday followed by a Vigil service at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, at Twin Chapels Mortuary, 1100 Tennessee Street, Vallejo, California. Burial with military honors will be held 11:30 a.m., Monday, November 3rd at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon. A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m, Saturday, February 21st at Northgate Christian Fellowship, 2201 Lake Herman Road, Benicia. Michael will be remembered as a caring and thoughtful man who loved his family deeply and never missed an opportunity to brag about them. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to the American Diabetes Foundation.
