Elmer L. Bertoncini September 17, 1921 – February 8, 2015 Elmer L. Bertoncini, a long-time Vallejo native, passed away Sunday at the age of 93 after a brief illness. Elmer was born on September 17, 1921 in Vallejo to Samuel Bertoncini and Mary Silva. He attended Vallejo schools and graduated from Vallejo High School in 1940. During World War II, Elmer served in the Mighty Eighth Air Force as a Corporal Tec 5. He was stationed on a B-17 bomber base in England. After the war, he went back to Mare Island where he worked as a carpenter and planner/estimator. He retired in 1973. Elmer was socially minded and enjoyed giving his time and energy to many organizations. He served as Past President of the Mare Island Carpenters’ Union and was active in the Boy Scouts, in the 1950s and 1960s, including serving as Scout Master for Troop 17. Elmer loved the Elks Lodge and spent countless hours volunteering his time at the Vallejo Elks Lodge 559 after joining in 1968. He served as the Grand Exalted Ruler in 1981-1982 and State Vice President of the Great Northwest District in 1994-1995. He was also active in Sons in Retirement (SIRS), Moose Lodge, Sons of Italy and the Lutheran Church. In his free time, Elmer enjoyed music, dancing and entertaining in his home. He is preceded in death by his wives, Florence Jane, Verlie D. and Phyllis F.; sister, Clarice (Babe) Knutte Deal; and brother, Clifford. Survivors include his sons, Lawrence E. (Winnie) and David G. (Glora); daughter, Laurel Ann; and stepson, Michael J. Saraiva (Mary). Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, February 20th , at Twin Chapels Mortuary, 1100 Tennessee Street, Vallejo. A private inurnment will be held at Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery, Dixon.
